Death occurs when a unit takes fatal damage to reduce their health to zero. When a hero dies, the screen's brightness is reduced and a death recap and respawn timer interface appear; they no longer provide vision to the team with the exception of during death. The players can be immune to death for four seconds with and for 1.3 seconds with .

When a player dies, he or she must wait a certain amount of time, which is indicated by the portraits of the heroes on the left-top screen. As the match progresses, the next death timer increases.[calculation needed]
