A debuff is any status effect given to a unit that negatively affects their combat performance in some way. The opposite of this status effect is called a buff. Among other things, debuffs can directly lower a unit's attributes, cause damage over time, or trigger additional effects.
All forms of crowd control fall under the debuff classification because they restrict a unit’s ability to directly combat, but debuffs that consist only of crowd control are not listed here because of their prevalence and relative importance to gameplay. See the crowd control page for details.
Debuffs, with the exception of those that reduce a unit's attributes, cannot be stacked on their own, with repeated applications to the same target causing the debuff duration to reset rather than increasing its effectiveness. All debuffs are temporary or conditional, and they vanish when the affected target dies. Debuffs ignore crowd control immunity because it is only intended to block certain effects in the majority of crowd control, but it can still be removed by skills that remove negative effects with a few exceptions.
