The main foundation for all physical defensive items. As the third most cheapest item, Leather Jerkin is specifically meant to be spammed in the wearer's inventory, although 1 or 2 pieces will always do the job.
Despite being a lowly Tier 1 item, Leather Jerkin is very underrated for its ability to prevent early ganks and snowballing by the lane opponent/s, to explain this in an understandable manner:
- An allied
Layla is facing a Chou in the Top Lane. Naturally, a Ranged Top wins the lane easily as they can punish and poke the melee hero with little to no reprisal but lets say that the Chou knows how to handle such. In this case, Layla has to both keep the pressure and be on her guard but here's the catch. Let's assume Chou uses the Assassin Emblem and applied 3 talent points on Invasion, this gives about 20 Physical Penetration and at level hero 2, Shunpo grants Chou 15 Physical Penetration at level 1 while the Layla only has 18 or less Physical Defense at hero level 2. This means that the moment Chou manages to get near Layla which is likely to how much mobility Chou has, Layla will be taking more than just True Damage that of which is even amplified by how damages are boosted if the target has a negative defense. This makes the fight extremely one sided. - To solve this, rather than buying Knife trying to build Swift Boots as fast as possible, buying 2 Leather Jerkin will be able to temporarily stop the Chou from dominating the lane. While Warrior Boots may have helped here, Chou does not rely highly on his Basic Attacks and Layla will benefit more from Swift Boots as 2 Leather Jerkins only costs 440 Gold while a full Warrior Boots costs about 720 Gold even with Boots added into the Gold Costs which is 690 Gold.
- Through this strategy, Layla can survive longer in the laning phase and eventually may be able to successfully take down Chou if given the opportunity, or survive until her allies comes to gank the Top Lane for the Turtle. Layla can then sell the 2 Leather Jerkins right after her first damage item is built or if Chou's pressure is no longer threatening to Layla.
