As an item that doesn't have a Unique Passive and costs more than 1,000 Gold. It is recommended to stick to the Tier 1 items that can supplant its stats for a much cheaper price and skip to its Tier 3 upgrades whenever possible.
In comparison to another defensive Tier 2 item that specializes in Magic Defense, specifically 
Magic Blade:
- 40 Physical Attack
- 24 Magic Defense
While stat wise, Magic Blade fails by 6 points to match Silence Robe's Magic Defense stat, through its Unique Passive, Lifeline where it gains a level-scaling Shield and another 12 Magic Defense, it becomes cost-effective despite pricing more.
Its true that Lifeline has a 40 second Cooldown and only triggers when the wielder has 29% HP or less, but in actuality and in a gameplay perspective, the Cooldown is generously fast and not to mention that Shielding can be further boosted by 
Oracle's Bless and other Healing Boosters while Silence Robe's 540 HP remains flat unless 
Belerick is involved but nonetheless. And thus, Magic Blade provides great utility and can synergize well with other items and spells. All those boons if the user instead opted for 130 more Gold.
