Trivia[]
Lore[]
- In the Determination event, Thamuz claims himself as the Lord of Darkness and wants Lunox to join him.[citation needed]
- Thamuz appears in Helcurt lore, wherein when Helcurt was tasked to defend the Sovereign of the Abyss, Obsidia, the opposing forces marching towards her palace were led by none other than the Lord Lava himself.
- In Dyrroth's trailer, Thamuz praises Dyrroth, seeing a part of himself in the demon prince, mentioning that he "inherited his brutality and valor".[4]
- Dyrroth also mentions Thamuz in one of his voicelines, mocking how his enemy should've been taught by Thamuz instead, praising his own technique.
- Thamuz is also half-heartedly mentioned in two of Helcurt's voicelines, describing him to be a "walking puddle of lava with a pair of dull blades", whilst also mockingly calling out to him. Their relationship could be attributed to that of a father and a family pet.
- Thamuz seems to show genuine empathy towards his kind, depicting him as a strict yet well-meaning ruler, prioritizing his tribe's survival over all else as shown in multiple artworks posted on official accounts.[5][6][7]
- A silhouette that looks very similar to Thamuz appears in Nolan's cinematic, A New Journey, wherein he talks about the origins of the Light and Darkness and the Era of Strife. Considering that the events are implied to have taken place an unknown amount of time in the past, it could be theorized that Thamuz has been fighting for the Abyss for longer than assumed.
Belerick Sacrificed Himself! Who's Responsible?[]
- During the Abyss's invasion of the Moonlit Forest (in "Belerick Sacrificed Himself! Who's Responsible?"), Thamuz indirectly killed Belerick, as he sacrificed his life to defend the Tree of Life.
- When Belerick was revived, his skillset was revamped to better counter continuously damaging opponents [citation needed]. One such enemy, being Thamuz.
- Whether or not Belerick grew specifically to defend against him is unclear.
- However, there have been multiple real-life cases of plants evolving and adapting to specific threats.
Demons Approaching[]
- In the official comic "Demons Approaching" debuting Brody, Benedetta, and Phoveus, Thamuz reveals that he is in possession of one of the "Nine Demon Lords of the Abyss", an orange crystal that Astaros recognizes as 'Gamunti'.[8] Due to Phoveus's revamped lore however, it is unclear on whether or not this remains canon.
The Abyss: Sovereign's Will / Post-Revamp[]
- In the cinematic Sovereign's Will, Thamuz interrupts Alice and Dyrroth from harvesting Obsidia's blood. Convinced that her corruption still lives within her bloodstream, he expresses his frustration as a result of Obsidia's past crimes against his people, corrupting them into Spawns of Decay.[9]
- Shortly after, Thamuz encounters a corrupted Fire Demon, hesitating, before being forced to kill it, fueling his rage further.
- Due to the small stature of the Fire Demon, it is possible that Thamuz was forced to kill a juvenile member of his species [citation needed], making it the second depiction of a youth's death, the first being Mila, in Arlott's lore.
- In Obsidia's concept video, Thamuz's race, the Fire Demons, do not seem to naturally grow a head as he does when compared to the usual depictions of his kind.[10] This might suggest that Thamuz may have carved it himself to assert his dominance as the rightful Lord Lava.
- This is further reinforced by the entry in Chapter 1 of his Mastery Code, where Thamuz is described to have "forged his body from lava".
- In the seasonal story for Season 38, Obsidia encounters a Fire Demon corrupted by the God of Darkness and on the verge of turning into a Spawn of Decay, breaking down as he fears for not only for himself, but for his tribesmen.
- The fire demon, in his last moments, isolates himself from the rest of his people to protect them from disease, in the name of Lord Thamuz.
Nexus Sea[]
- The Annihilator is heavily based off of H.P. Lovecraft and his works of cosmic horror, primarily of the Cthulhu mythos, wherein beings commonly known as the "Outer Gods" (a term popularized by the heavily Lovecraft inspired roleplaying game "Call of Cthulhu") exist beyond human comprehension. [11]
- They are described to serve purposes far beyond mortal understanding, and are known by many names (in Thamuz's case, he's also known as "The Great Scourge"), very similar to the skin's accompanying lore.
- Additionally, a squid-like buckle adorned with wings can be seen on his model, heavily reminiscent of Cthulhu's (the titular Outer God) most common depiction.
Miscellaneous[]
- Thamuz's original hero showcase video on the official YouTube channel had an abrupt change in thumbnail design.[citation needed]
- Thamuz had four different walking animations for his Scytheless form throughout his development.
- In the advanced server prior to his release, Thamuz used to run on all fours without his scythes.
- On release, he instead walked on his hind legs, slightly leaned in with his arms stretched outward.
- On his soft rework on Patch 1.6.84 on May 24, 2022, his posture was changed to be straighter and started to jog, more akin to how a human person would run.[citation needed]
- However, this change would soon be rolled back to the previous version an unknown amount of updates later.
- On his revamp on September 17, 2025, he was given a new scytheless animation, similar to his removed one on Patch 1.6.84.
- Thamuz was the first hero introduced from the Abyss faction, predating heroes like Alice, Dyrroth, and Selena in the lore.
- His passive Grand Lord Lava was one of the first abilities in the game to consistently deal true damage based on enemies' HP.
- Some players compare his look to Balrog from Lord of the Rings or Ifrit from Final Fantasy.
- His weapons, Molten Scythes, return to him on their own, similar to boomerangs.
- After his revamp, Thamuz now has different glow effects on his model during his ultimate, depending on his skin.
- When Thamuz moves, a lava trail forms behind him, showing his burning presence. He is one of the few heroes whose footsteps leave elemental effects on the battlefield.
- Unfortunately, this has been since removed after his revamp.
- On December 18th, 2025, Thamuz received a skin survey with a design very reminiscent of Khorne, a deity of chaos known in the Warhammer franchise.[citation needed]
- Thamuz shares the same Japanese-language voice actor, Nakamura Taishi, with and .
